Friday Fences: Kangaroos

Much to my daughter amusement, I made a stop on the way home from swim training today to take some photos of the paddocks beside our suburb for Friday Fences. With all the rain we have had over the past week, the paddocks are slowing transforming into ponds! The happy croaking of all the excited frogs was almost deafening!

I was interrupted from my concentration by my daughter shouting and pointing, and there I saw a mob of kangaroos,  bounding, and bouncing down the hill.

Us Australian's think it's very funny that people from the Northern Hemiphere seem to believe that kangaroos just bound down the street in Australia!. Toady...it was almost true as our house is a mere few hundred meters from  this spot.

Remember...you can enlarge the picture by clicking on it.......

You can just see the kangaroos in the distance if you click on the picture...(I hadn't noticed them when  I took the picture)

There are two cheeky Kangaroos hiding in this picture...can you see them??

Thankful for Three Children, But Humbled at the Same Time

It was night time on valentines day. We hadn’t made a big deal about valentines day, we never really do actually, even though it is the anniversary of the day GrumpyDaddy proposed (which proves there is a romantic bone in there, somewhere….).

That morning we were proudly presented with the cards and craft that the kids had done, proclaiming their love for mummy and daddy The cards were ‘beautifully’ illustrated with hearts, stick figures…and lots of glitter… My youngest daughter, muscles (7), had made a cute little ‘animal’ out of pom-poms and I showered her in kisses , hugs and gratitude, as all mums do!

That night, the girls were doing their homework and GrumpyDaddy and I were trying to work on Buster’s speech with some card games. We were trying to make it fun for him so there was lots of laughing, cheering and clapping.

My little girl went to the bedroom to get the pom-pom animal she had made for me. She interrupted our speech game by sitting in my lap and trying to re-present me with her gift.

I know that she wanted the attention that my son was getting. I also think she wanted some more of the hugs, kisses and gratitude she receive that morning. I guess it really made her feel special….and she wanted that feeling again.

This for me, is the absolute hardest part of being a mum to three children. I try as absolutely hard as I can to show them that I love them all desperately…the exact same amount. Sometimes I feel like I am giving them so much of myself that there is nothing left for me!....but still this doesn’t seem to be enough.

Later that night I had a talk with my little girl and tried to explain to her how important it was that we help her brother with his speech. She asked me if I loved him more than her, because I spent more time with him….sometimes, even though kids don’t mean to…they can still break your heart….

…it’s so ironic really. I  love all my children, but my two girls have reached the stage where I actually really enjoy spending time with them, talking to them, learning about their developing personalities and thoughts, their day at school and sports training. Often, I can’t do that as much as I would like, because I have the responsibility of caring for their demanding little brother. Spending time with my school-aged girls is  a different experience to entertaining a pre-schooler and playing endless games of Thomas the Tank Engine…

I tried to explain to her that Buster is  younger and needs me to help him more than a ‘big girl’ like herself…but I don’t think she was convinced.

I am extremely thankful that I have my three wonderful children, but sometimes I don’t think I’m really up to the challenge of looking after each one on them the way they deserve. I am humbled that they need so much love and attention from me…..I just hope that I won’t them down….this parenting thing can be hard!

For Thankful Thursday, on  'International Womans Day', I'm sharing over at Kate Says Stuff...what are you thankful for today??

Wordless Wednesday: Through the Eyes of Children

Like their mum, my children love playing with the camera! I just love seeing the results, taken from thier low perspective, of the things that matter to them in thier world...complete with the editing function that comes with the kids camera. Here are some of my favorite shots, taken and edited by the kids...sometimes they can be a little surprising!!

Today I'm sharing my  immature sense of humor with  My Little Drummer Boys, Sakura Haruka and Tina's pic story. Pop over and see some great Wordless Wednesday posts!

10 Tips for Beginning Running

About 2 years ago I decided it was my time to transform myself for the benefit of my health and my family. You can see my post  about this here (how I lost 30kg). I took up running during my weight loss campaign as a way to burn more kilojoules, but I soon developed a love and passion for the sport. I don’t know if it is a personality attribute or character flaw, but I often get consumed by the activity I am doing and get completely caught up in it…this is what happened to me with running. I became addicted to everything running….I read magazines from Australia and all over the world. I scoured the internet for any information I could find.

Recently, I have noticed a lot of talk on blogs and on twitter about participating in fitness challenges, starting a running program and losing weight. I thought I would share some of the things I have learnt about running (often the hard way, by trial and error).

I truly appreciate that there is more than one way of doing things, but these are some of the things that I found useful. These are the thing I tell my own daughters when we go running..…weather they want to hear them or not!!

  1. Shoes: I know it’s a bit basic, but it’s really important to have properly fitting shoes suited to your physiology and running style, even though they are really expensive! This can make a lot of different to running comfortably or sustaining injuries.

  1. Clothing: I’d also recommend getting some running clothes that are made from technical fabrics that breath. Cotton shirts, shorts  underwear and bras just soak up sweat, stick, cling, get heavy and stink. They can rub, causing rashes and blisters. It’s even important to have socks made from technical fabric. I find cotton socks really rub and cause painful blisters, especially on longer runs. Compression garments are also great for stopping the ‘wobble’ and I really liked running with the tight sensation around my legs. For some reason it just seemed to make me feel stronger!

  1. Underwear: This is a personal preference, but I like running shorts with their own built in underwear. These are held in place by the shorts and seemed to stay in the right place! Cotton underwear gets very sweaty, rubs on my legs and leaves very painful chafing…..and I’d always be pulling them out of places that underwear just shouldn’t be!! ( I’d also recommend buying some anti chafing cream, just in case).

  1. ‘Accidents’: This one might be a tad too much information, but the above chafing was exacerbated by my very weak bladder! After having the 3 kids, my pelvic floor muscles are absolutely shot. When I first started running, I could only run in the morning. before drinking. I also had to run with ‘poise’ protection (causing more chafing!). There is something about the pounding nature of running. and if I happened to cough at the same time …well…. Things in that area have improved over the last 2 years and as long as I empty my bladder before I start, everything should be fine!!

  1. Eating: Its really important to eat!! For a little while, I thought I would lose weight quicker if I didn’t eat before or after a run. However this deprives your body of the energy it needs to adapt to the training, and recover. There is a small window in time, just after exercise where carbohydrates are quickly converted into glycogen and stored in the muscles to replace the glycogen depleted during exercise. So it’s really important to eat straight after running so that you can recover to your full potential. Eating before a run helps ensure you have the energy to complete your run….particularly if it is a long run. I don’t eat before a short run (5-7km) but I make sure to eat for a long run (for me , a long run is 10-15km). I know what it is like to run completely out of energy. It has happened to me both cycling and running and it is a horrible experience. I get really, really, cold, have pins and needles, I lose peripheral vision, and sometimes even the capacity for rational thought!! It is a state that is best avoided!!

  1. Recovery time: At the beginning, it’s really, really important to take it slowly and give yourself plenty of time to recover. I remember having difficulty getting out of the car, stepping up gutters. Bending down to pick up things or go to the toilet was best completely avoided. The increase in fitness from training comes from adapting to the training and this takes time. Our body’s need to recover from the last exercise so that it can adapt to that training and become stronger for the next exercise. Insufficient recovery time will greatly hinder that process and can result in the classic symptoms of over training such as extreme soreness, tiredness, and having your immune system not function well. This can result in getting really sick and having to stop running altogether for some time until you are well again……

  1. Nutrition: …after overtraining and getting sick myself, I now really prioritize nutrition. I take multivitamins, to help get all the nutrients my body needs. I also take calcium, magnesium and vitamin D supplements to help my bones and immune system. I make sure I eat some good fats  and omega 3, 6 and 9 to keep my body healthy,

  1. Tech head: I really enjoy monitoring my runs by timing them and keeping comprehensive records. To see my times improving and making progress in my fitness was really motivating. Now I have trouble running without my Garmin (GPS watch). I also really enjoy running my long runs and recovery runs with music from my iphone on an arm band (I like running with my phone for safety reasons as well.)

  1. Training Plan: I make a training plan for myself that incorporates these things:…. a long run, a fartleck session (running faster for a short time), a hill run and recovery runs.

  1. Warm-up: I always make sure I do a warm up, not just stretches, but a dynamic warm-up of  jumping, lunging, running on the spot.

I’m sorry that post turned out much longer than I’d expected, once I started writing, I just had so much to share….Do you have any tips for beginner runners, or any experiences you would like to share? I would love to hear about them in the comments! If you wold like any more information about any of these points, please feel free to contact me.

Youth Sports Weekend: Swimming ACT Championships

Well, given the amount of rainfall that Canberra has received over the past week (we received a months rainfall in just 1 day!), it seemed fitting that the Swimming ACT championships was on this weekend.

Although Flash is 8, she trains with much older kids in her swimming squad. She has had a few problems in the squad because I don’t think the older kids have liked her being there very much and have given her a bit of a ‘cold shoulder’. I have seen them tell her to go last in the swimming line because she is the youngest (until they noticed me watching….). Her towel and flippers have also been taken and placed in various  high locations….this has forced a tearful flash to come and get me to get the objects down for her. Without flash knowing, I have spoken to the coaches about this and they have insisted that her gear was taken by accident….I’m not so sure….).

Since Flash has started swimming with the older kids, I have definitely noticed a drop in her confidence. This has been reflected by a plateau in her times and in some cases she has been swimming slower than she was at the end of last year.  She is a very determined individual however, and wants to keep swimming with the older kids. She is even trying to move up to the next squad!

Today at the swim meet, the under 8’s were only able to compete in the 50m events. This was unfortunate for flash as her biggest strength is the longer distances. So, our goal for this meet was to achieve some personal bests (PBs) in preparation for her first big NSW state competition…the Speedo Sprints in Sydney, next weekend.

The day got off to a fabulous start with the 50m breaststroke. Flash swam a 4 second PB to win a silver medal!

Next up was the 50m freestyle where she managed to just scrape in a PB by a few 10th’s of a second….anyway , a PB is a PB and she was very excited to receive a another silver medal. It was a fantastic race and she just missed out on a gold by a fingernail!!

The pattern was then again repeated in the backstroke, with flash racking up another big  PB and another silver medal. Back stroke as been her weakest stroke, and it was fantastic to see such an improvement!

After 3 second places, the final race was the 50m butterfly. Butterfly is Flash’s favorite stroke….When I swim with her, I do three strokes and need to rest! She swims along effortlessly beside me yelling out “come on mum…you can do it” …….Anyway, she swam a fantastic, gutsy and close race and was just able to hang on for a PB and a gold medal!

Flash is wearing the gold cap in the fourth lane from the left, she leads for most of the way...just hanging on in the end!

During this race, something really amazing happened, that has never happened before. I was really surprised by the way the older members of our club stated cheering for Kayla!

This was the best part of the swimming meet, but not because she won a gold medal. It was the best part of the meet  because after the race, the older kids from our club that had been cheering for Flash ran to the end of the pool to pull her out of the water, High-five,  hug and congratulate her. They then escorted her back to the coaches who also greeted her with more high-fives. You just should of seen the joy on her face!  They gave her such a boost that she actually danced back along the pool deck to the coaches!! I was so captivated by the unfolding scene, and so in the moment, that I even forgot to take photos!! Today was really something that I will never forget!

It seems as though Flash has finally won the respect of some of the older kids in the team. I am really hoping that this will see an end to the childish behavior from some of the other kids.

I am so proud of my little Flash today, She achieve four PBs and  became ACT champion in the butterfly and runner up in the other three strokes. She has also shown that although she is only 8 years old, she has the guts and determination to do her very best.

We are really looking forward to the experience of traveling to Sydney Olympic Park next weekend for her first big NSW state-level competition.

Have your children participated in a youth sport this weekend. I would love you to share your experiences with us. You can tell us about your experience in the comments section of this blog, or on the SportyMummy Facebook page. You can even link a blog post to the Linky tool below. You can help create a community that supports, encourages and motivates parents to get their kids involved in Youth sports and a healthy active lifestyle!

Blog of the Ghost Cat

The inspirational Eden, over at Edenland has shared her belief (or perhaps, hope) that everyone is assigned a guardian angel. She also writes that a feather on our path are sign that an angel has been there. She has asked:

"What's your own personal sign that things will be ok? That you're safe, in the world. That something or someone has your back."

I love to take part in Eden Memes, to see if my writing is up to the challenge of digging a little deeper than I normally do on this blog….so here goes…

Note: I’ve written that as my introduction so that you don’t think I’m completely crazy (or at least I’m not alone in my craziness) when I tell you about my ghost cat.

This may be hard to appreciate if you are not a cat person, but I have always grown up with cats around. It’s strange though because my mum always hated cats…so I think it must have been my dad’s doing…..

I think there is a certain type of person that is a cat person. One who is a little quiet, introspective, likes their own company. A person that can seem a little aloof, but really appreciates a good ‘scratch under the chin’, but only when they want it of course!

Cat’s are more than opportunistic ‘flea bags’. They are companions. My cat’s seem to know when I, or one of the kids are sick, they sort of stand guard, by hovering on the couch, or curled up on the end of the bed.

Our cat 'Sporty' watching over my sick little man

I was definitely a cat person  type of child, especially when my dad left…..

Throughout my life, at times of stress, sadness, and heartbreak or even just times when I’m alone, I can feel the tell tale brush of a cats tail against my legs, or ‘feel’ a cat behind me. I reach around expecting to feel the warm soft fur, but there is nothing there. Sometimes I just assume my own cat is in the room with me, until I find him locked outside.

At first I was sure I was imagining  it…..and I most probably am. But now I find that feeling comforting, a sign, almost like an old friend , just letting me know that they are there, specially for me…standing guard.

I have always loved the idea of guardian angles. I have always wondered if my sister, who passed away as a baby, is ‘out there’ watching over me and now my children. I wonder if my first miscarried baby is there with her.

As a scientist, I tend to think rationally and mostly believe that we are flesh and bones and pulses of electricity and hormones. But I don’t think this biological rationalaism fully explains love.… I really hope there is something more. I hope that the love we feel will continue after we’ve gone. Perhaps this love is carried in the hearts of the people we love, or perhaps the love is released out into the universe to stay with them, watch over them and protect them..... and when it's needed most….drop a feather…or…give you fleas J

Pop over to Edenland and find out what other think about their *signs* . It's a fascinating read!!

Body for Women (BSc): Review and Recipe for ‘Protein Power Muffins'

In our family, we take sport, health and exercise pretty seriously. My daughters do their chosen sports of swimming and gymnastics at the highest level available where we live. We are also heavily involved in little athletics and soccer. My children love their sport and I believe part of my job, as their mum, is to provide the opportunities for them so that they can reach their potential.

I love sport myself and have been a competitive cyclist and more recently I have taken up running with an absolute passion. I have a background in medical research and I have spent time researching ways that I can help my self be a better runner and help my children with their sports.

I have read that there are three physical components to becoming a successful athlete. These are:

  1. Training
  2. Recovery
  3. Nutrition.

A far as my children are concerned the training and recovery part is taken care of mostly by their coaches. I feel that one of the best things I can do is ensure that they eat properly so that:

  1. They have enough energy for training and competition
  2. Have the essential nutrients for adapting to training and recovery
  3. Have the right nutrients available to protect their bodies by helping guard against sickness and injury.

For me, like many women, I am conscious about what I eat. I aim to fuel my body for running and stay healthy and fit whilst maintaining a healthy weight.

Providing  a diet rich in nutrients for my family is a absolute priority. It is easy to provide enough kilojoules in the form of carbohydrates, but I think the real challenge is to not have ‘empty calories’. That is, making the food really count so that it not only supplies energy, but nutrients as well. Valuable nutrients like protein for muscle development and calcium, for bone strength, vitamins and antioxidants for immune function and overall health.

You can see why I was so excited to be contacted by an Australian company called  Body Science Australia (BSc) to try  their Body for Women range of products.

The products include bars, pre-mixed smoothies, bites and protein powder. All the products are high in protein and low in carbohydrate. They contain vitamins, minerals antioxidants and omega 3 6 & 9.  They taste really yummy too!! I think this range is perfect to keep on hand for when life is just too busy to prepare healthy food. For example, if you are at work, or you are on the move running errands or being the kids taxi driver! It is a much better option than takeaway or a vending machine!!!

My favorite product however is the Shaping Protein for Women powder. I have found that it is really great ingredient to cook with.

In our family muffins are a favorite after school and pre-training snack. They are easy to prepare, freeze and eat in the car on the way to training. They are a good source of carbs but, they don’t contain a lot of other nutrients like protein and vitamins. I thought that incorporating the protein powder would give the muffins a valuable nutritional boost.

After a little  fun experimentation in the kitchen I have come up with some recipes that have definitely been met with approval from my greatest critics…my children. They are also great for a recovery snack with a cup of coffee after a run for me!

I used the wonderful Banana Muffins recipe from the Fit Mum Blog as a basis for my muffins as I love how they have yoghurt and oil instead of butter (Thanks Vicki!).

Actually, I prepared these muffins for afternoon tea on the way to swim training and I also was taking one of my daughters friends. Later, at the pool, this girls mother asked her if she wanted to ride to the pool with her dad or me the next day….she replied …I like going with dad, but then I’d miss out on all the great food!” …that sounds like a positive recommendation to me!
