When we return home from often long and ‘torturous’ road trips (think 3 kids squeezed in the back seat saying “…are we there yet?...” for 12 hours straight), Black Mountain tower is the first Canberra landmark they see. It is greeted with much anticipation and jubilation! The site of the tower signals that we are back home!
The tower is visible in many parts of Canberra and the children know that their dad’s work is located at the base of Black Mountain . Just about wherever they are in Canberra , they can look at he tower and know that their daddy is working right there!
For me, Black Mountain tower is a symbol of freedom, adventure and growing up. I moved to Canberra , far away from my Country NSW home to start at the Australian National University . It was here, under the shadow of the tower, that I began to discover who I was. I had the chance to experience that heady feeling of first-time freedom and independence. Of being surrounded by others who loved to learn and study, of finally finding my tribe.
Now my kids just love to climb up there and run around it…and they really think that they can see our house! It's a good thing they have a fence up there!!
For Friday Fences, I'm linking with Life according to Jan and Jer. Click over and see some really interesting and creative photos from all over the world... though a fence!

ReplyDeleteThanks Beth! They had a great time even though it was blowing a gale!
DeleteWow...what a view...great shots!
ReplyDeleteThanks..and thanks for hosting this fun meme!!
DeleteAll those satellite dishes look like dangling jewellery on the tower!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lesley! I love the way you see jewelry on the tower! I see it every day...now I'll be looking at it in a whole new way :)
Deleteoops, a much needed fence I believe. But I can understand your childrens joy in running around the tower.
ReplyDeleteThank you! They were very excited to be up so high!
DeleteGreat photos. Are they small trees or is that a really massive tower?
ReplyDeleteThe trees are normal sized trees...but you know how when you're up high...everything below you looks small like ants???.....that!
DeleteI love the shot of your smiling kids running around. So much fun! And the little red head...<3 I married one. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Rebecca!!
DeleteIt's lovely but what is its purpose? Just as an overlook? I'm sure the views are superb. That little red-headed boy is a doll!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Kathy! It's a communications tower to broadcast TV, radio and mobile phone signals.

ReplyDeleteThose kids look like they are having a ball. I would be scared to death. Me and heights don't get along. Great pics!
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan! I think the excitement of being up high caused some of that running!
DeleteI can see why that's a favorite place. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind comment!
DeleteFantastic view! But I'm with you, and glad the fence is there! :-) Really cute kids. Enjoyed hearing about the tower.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your lovely comment Marie!

Such joy in those little faces! And I look all your different interpretations of the tower. Just today I was thinking about being able to climb to the top of our Statue of Liberty in New York wothout getting breathless. For sure couldn't do that today--nor your Black Mt. Tower.
ReplyDeleteIt's a looooong way down!
