Why I Love to Run!

A question I often get asked is “…why do you run?..” I guess pounding the pavement, exhausting myself, risking injury, waking at the crack of dawn, sometimes in the Canberra cold….it  does seem like an odd thing to do doesn’t it?!

Why I started running

Before I had kids a had a little experience with running when I took part in some triathlon and dualthon events at university…lets just say that I very quickly chose to take up cycling, running was just so hard! It felt like cycling up hill…all the time…even when running down hill!

After having children and not doing much exercise, I started running because my daughter wanted to train for her school cross country run. I remember the first time I went running with her she was loping along beside side me, chatting away. She asked me…

“…What’s that tree called Mummy?…Mummy??….mummy???...”

and all I could reply with was..

 “…too puffed…..can’t talk…”

After that experience, I decided that running would be a great way for me to exercise and burn some extra kilojoules for the weight loss efforts I was consumed by at the time. For me, running ticked all the boxes.

Because I so sucked at running, a 30min run was enough to absolutely exhaust me! Having been a competitive cyclist before having the children, I knew I would have had to ride my bike for hours to get the same effect and with three young children, I just didn’t have the time for that!

It suited my schedule to run early in the mornings when GrumpyDaddy was still at home to look after the kids. Usually I’d go before they even woke up!

I thought running would be cost effective because I didn’t need to pay for gym membership and equipment….little did I know how expensive running shoes, cloths and electronic gadgets were J

Nervous before my first 10k fun run!


Running now means a whole lot more to me than just a way to burn calories and lose weight.

I love running now for the example it sets for my kids! In my experience kids seem to copy the behavior of the important adults in their lives. They can see for them selves that I think physical activity is important because I do it myself! I even think they were a little proud of me when I finish the fun runs…even though I definitely don’t finish at the front of the pack! In a small way, I hope my running inspires my kids in their sports!

I also just love running for the sake of running! I love that I can get away from the kids for just a little while and have some time to think! There is something about the rhythm of running, or the stress on the body that seems to free up my mind. Sometimes I get so involved in a thought, I haven’t even noticed that I have run kilometers! I love to plan while I’m running…every thing from what to make for dinner, shopping lists, birthday parties, the kids activities…everything!

I also love how I feel after I run! Although it is probably just in my head I feel stronger, I feel like I have accomplished something that day! I remember the first time I ever ran 10km…I was exhausted but man I felt so good!! It was such a high!! Even though running uses energy I find that I seem to have much more energy for the rest of the day. I love running because I love the way that it makes me feel…..Fitter, stronger, and more energetic.

  1. With you all the way on that one Nicole, I love running, it is just so easy and efficient as a workout and it makes me feel young. I really do not look forward to the days when I say I cant run anymore! Great post.x

    1. Thanks so much Karla! I think I now what you mean. When I'm sick, and I can't run... and I see others out there running, I even get running jealousy!!

  2. I am more of a swimmer and hated running.. but I kept being asked to take part esp in long distance because of the stamina I gained from swimming haha. In uni I ran a lot just to lose weight and because the pool wasn't convenient to get to..

    Nowadays I don't run.. but I do jog sometimes. Walk quite a bit too ;p

    1. Thanks Ai! It's so great you are a swimmer. I never really learnt how to swim properly as a child and I find it so hard now!! I would just love to be able to swim well though!

  4. That's great! I used to run 10km once a week with a friend, and loved it. Enter pregnancy, bung knees and bung ankles. And I have developed new, um, 'chest assets' since having Ashleigh and the idea of running with them is terrifying!! Walking's my new running. It's (almost) as good.

    1. Walking is great too! I really love walking with a friend and having a good chat! I don't think it really matters what exercise you so as long as you are keeping active and doing something!

  5. I'm a runner because I'm good at it.

    I don't really enjoy it, its hard, it's sweaty and I get a really red face (I'm not abnormally vain but I'm talking REALLY red, and it takes ages to subside. I can be red for hours afterwards).

    But I love the way I feel afterwards, the endorphins rock. I also love winning stuff! Thats a pretty big motivation. Last time I properly competed I was 15 weeks pregnant with Peanut, and I dominated. That felt good :) I don't like running by alone though because there is not that competitive element, so I go too easy on myself. For that reason, solitary pre-dawns are not my thing :)

    1. That's fantastic! ...and it sounds like me and cycling...I get so competitive I've been known to chase down old men with sheep skin seats and mud flaps on their bikes!!

  6. I so get this! I love the feeling of running further than you have run and being faster than you have been... Nothing like it. Nothing!

    I am finally starting to get into running again - 15 months after having a baby... Better late than never!

    Great post, your passion is evident!

    I've never been able to run... or that is what I have spent the past 35 years telling myself. But today I ran (well jogged) for a kilometre. It took nearly ten minutes, but I have never ever in my life done that before. And suddenly I can't wait to see if I can make it two, three... I plan on doing a 4k fun run in May with my sister. I've always considered the term 'fun run' an oxymoron but I don't any more!

  8. Hey Nicole. I love to run too and like you I use it to get my mind organised for the day ahead. There's nothing better than pushing your body. You feel strong and invincible. Happy running

  9. I am trying to become a runner. I love the idea of being able to run. I have always looked at runners and dreamed I would one day be like that. Slowly I am getting there :)

I've been running for five years now and started because I live far away from a gym and if I wanted to continue exercising, I was going to have to hit the pavement. It was so hard in the beginning, but I stuck with it and even turned into a little bit of an addict for a while. I took all of February off and just started back last week. I skipped today so I could blog! I gotta make sure writing doesn't take the place of running. Sitting with a computer in my lap = feet not moving = metabolism that isn't moving! Although in the past I've ran just because I enjoy it and to keep my weight in check, lately my heart hasn't been in it. So, thanks for your post! You gave me inspiration ... :)
